Five Dead, Seven Missing After Fishing Boat Sinks in East Java

Jakarta. Five people have drowned and seven are missing after a fishing boat with 21 people on board sank in waters off Plawangan in Jember district, East Java, on Thursday morning (19/07), police said.

Nine crewmembers were reportedly rescued after the vessel Joko Berek, captained by Dirman, 50, sank in rough seas.

"The boat was hit by [huge] waves and sank while returning to port at 08.15 a.m. after fishing in the ocean," Jember Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Kusworo Wibowo said in a statement.

The five fishermen who lost their lives have been identified as Cecep (45), Ulum (35) and Hadi (21), all from Puger, and Soim (50) and Hasan (50) from Balung.

A search and rescue operation is ongoing.
